President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva of Brazil warmly welcomed Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto at the 17th BRICS Summit in Rio de Janeiro. This marked Prabowo’s first participation in the BRICS forum as Indonesia became a full member. Lula highlighted the significance of the Bandung Conference in 1955, emphasizing the spirit of unity against great power dominance that continues in BRICS. He connected the establishment of the United Nations to the rejection of a divided world and the promotion of a multipolar international order by the Bandung Conference. As a full member of BRICS since 2025, Indonesia and other leaders discussed political challenges, global governance reforms, economic cooperation, and shared priorities at the summit. The presence of new member representatives such as Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed and Egyptian Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly complemented the founding nations of BRICS, reinforcing the forum’s commitment to multilateralism.
